At the end of 2018, Xcel Energy, one of the largest power companies in the U.S., pledged to go 80 percent carbon-free by 2030 and 100 percent by 2050 as long as zero-carbon technologies continue to evolve. Then, in April 2019, renewable electricity generation in the U.S. overtook coal-fired electricity generation nationwide for the first time ever.
